food items for needy Veterans
Friday, December 9, 2011

Veterans like Stephen Dishler would prefer to stay home for the holidays.  Confined to a wheelchair, even the most mundane tasks like shopping become a challenge for him.  Thanks to the annual VA San Diego Care and Share Drive, Dishler and Veterans like him, along with their families can enjoy a little holiday cheer without leaving their residence.

This year’s drive will bring 320 boxes filled with food and toys to 800 needy Veterans and their families across San Diego County.  The boxes include canned and boxed foods, grocery certificates for turkeys, and perishable food items.  Each box is custom-designed to meet the needs of the family, including toys for the children.

To raise money for the event, the employees hold bake sales, a silent auction, penny drive, and food drive.  In addition, they received donations from San Diego vendors.

After all the items are collected, staff volunteers will pack the boxes on Dec. 14 for delivery on the 15th and 16th.

“It’s good to know people are putting this together for Veterans like me,” said William Hendrickson, who received a basket last year.  “It lets us know there are people out there who still care about us.”

To donate until Dec. 16, please contact LeAnne Shipp at (858) 552-5400 or Robert West at (858) 643-1821.
