Cancer Survivorship and Resources

According to the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, an individual is considered a cancer survivor from the time of diagnosis, through the balance of his or her life. Family members, friends, and caregivers are also impacted by the survivorship experience and are therefore included in this definition.

As outlined by the Office of Cancer Survivorship, our mission of care for survivors includes enhancement of quality of life and length of survival of persons diagnosed with cancer.  Areas of focus are directed to identification and treatment of the late and long-term adverse effects of treatment, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

Survivorship care for a cancer patient includes coordination of care between primary care providers and specialists to ensure all health needs are met. This encompasses interventions for consequences of cancer and its treatment including medical, psychological, financial and social, assessment of late effects of treatment, and surveillance for recurrence and/or secondary cancers.

To this mission, the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) has established a survivorship clinic, available to Veteran cancer survivors.  Access to this clinic is through appointment requested by the treating oncologist.
