Anticoagulation Clinic

The Anticoagulation Clinic is a clinic for all patients taking warfarin. A consult by your primary care provider or any provider who has prescribed warfarin is required prior to being seen in the clinic.

Arthritis Exercise Class

Arthritis exercise class is an exercise program designed specifically for people with arthritis that uses gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility, maintain/improve range of motion and to help maintain muscle strength. It can also be a starting exercise for those that have sedentary lifestyle, obese patients that wants to exercise. Most exercises are chair based, a few standing exercises are included and at the end of the exercise a relaxation technique. The educational component provides basic principles of exercise, joint protection, tips on stress management, pain and how to make exercise a daily routine. Participants love the socialization component, the feeling of camaraderie, a form to verbalize issues, or accomplishments, sharing hobbies/sports etc.

In order to benefit from the class, participants must attend at least 8 sessions.

Location: Medical Center La Jolla – Patient Education Classroom (Mondays from 2:00 - 3:00 pm) and Mission Valley Clinic in the Primary Care Conference Room (Tuesdays from 1:00 - 2:00 pm )

Diabetes Basics

This class covers important topics for self-management in a 4-hour class:   diet, exercise, monitoring, medications, healthy coping, avoiding complications.

Diabetes Diet Class

This class is taught by a registered dietitian who teaches you what foods to eat and how much, menu planning, grocery shopping, eating out, weight control.

Diabetes: Getting Started

This class is an introduction to diabetes for patients who are newly diagnosed.  Introduces information about diagnosis, medications, diet, exercise, and other diabetes resources in a 1-hour class

Glucose Meter Training session follows, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Offers information about diet and exercise – key elements that are proven to prevent progression to diabetes.

E.D. Education

This class is designed to discuss treatment options available at the VA San Diego for Erectile Dysfunction, also known as impotence.  Spouses of patients are welcome.

Gateway to Healthy Living Class

This drop-in, one-time, 90-minute class can help patients identify goals and enhance motivation and success in making healthy lifestyle changes. Changes can include managing stress, quitting tobacco, exercise or other health goals.   Gateway aims to help patients clarify their personal goals and connect with VA and community resources to ensure success.  Patients who attend can also receive follow-up telephone support from our Gateway Team, if desired.  Walk-in patients welcome, no referral required.

Healthy Eating Cooking Demonstration

Looking for new recipes?  Want to learn how to make a healthier version of a recipe you already know?  Come to our cooking demonstration!  Every month we prepare 2-3 recipes in front of a live Veteran audience.  You’ll learn ways to make healthy food taste good and you get to sample the food at the end of the demonstration.  Each month has a different theme and different recipes.

9:30-11:00 am, 4th Tuesday of the month

Hearing Aid Orientation

This class is required for Veterans who are issued a hearing aid through the VA.   Attendance is strongly encouraged for anyone who has a hearing loss, or has difficulty communicating with a person with hearing loss.  Family members are welcome.  Topics include:

  • Use, care and maintenance of your hearing aid
  • Realistic expectations for hearing aid use
  • Aids to communication
  • Dealing with difficult listening situations
  • Speech reading/ Clear speech techniques
  • Using your hearing aid with the telephone

Lighten Up! Nutrition Class

La Jolla – 9:30-11:30 a.m., 2nd Tuesday of the month

Chula Vista – 8:30 - 10:30 a.m., 2nd Wednesday of the month
Oceanside – 10:00 a.m. - noon, 3rd Thursday of the month

This class covers the basic principles of successful weight control.  It includes information on behavior modification techniques such as maintaining a food and activity diary/weight chart, and setting realistic goals.  The importance of healthy food choices and regular exercise (as approved by the primary care provider) are emphasized.

Mantram Repetition for Relaxation

This program teaches mantram repetition for clear mindedness and symptom management.  A mantram (mantra) is a word or phrase (sometimes spiritual) chosen by the participant.  The course consists of 8 consecutive weekly meetings, 1½ hours per week.

This program is for patients who:

  • want to improve their ability to cope with daily hassles of ordinary life
  • are in recovery from drugs/alcohol use
  • are suffering from a chronic or life-threatening illness (such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer, HIV/AIDS)
  • want to learn to rapidly shift focus off of something you don’t want to focus on, and on to something you do want to focus on
  • have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, hypertension, cancer, HIV/AIDS)

This program is NOT for patients who:

  • are currently abusing drugs/alcohol
  • have psychotic symptoms such as hearing voices or feeling paranoid
  • have a diagnosis of dementia or severe loss of memory
  • are looking for a “quick fix” and don’t really want to change

Please Note: Veterans who are Priority Group 7 (Category C) will be billed their usual co-pay amount for classes.

Anticoagulation Education: New Patient Teaching Class

This is a one-time class required for all patients with newly prescribed anticoagulant therapy (warfarin) or patients new to the VA San Diego anticoagulation clinic. Patients enrolled in the clinic who are on warfarin are encouraged to attend a class as a refresher course as needed. The class is designed to increase patients’ knowledge of warfarin and clinic routines/policies. The class offers information about the safe and effective use of warfarin, blood values (INR), health/medical considerations when taking the medication, including behaviors/activities that can increase the risk of bleeding.

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Patient and Family Education Series

This series of SCI classes is designed to help spinal cord injury/disease (SCI/D) Veterans and their families to learn about caring for themselves and becoming active in the community. The classes are mandatory for all newly injured or rehabilitating SCI inpatients, and are highly encouraged for their family members and other SCI/D patients. The classes are also open to the SCI/D community-at-large. All classes are open to any VASDHS outpatients, their family members and personal care attendants.

Tobacco Cessation Groups

These groups are for all Veterans interested in quitting tobacco use.  Veterans will receive counseling, support and tobacco cessation medications for quitting tobacco use.

  • Meet weekly for 60 minutes
  • You can start attending at any time
  • You will receive counseling on behavior change, support and medications to help you stop using tobacco
  • These are drop-in groups: No referral or appointment is needed
  • Check-in and make appointment when you arrive.
  • There is no co-pay for attending tobacco cessation treatment

Weight Control/MOVE! Program

National Comprehensive Weight Management Program established for veterans with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or greater (ask primary care provider for confirmation). Eligible veterans seeking assistance with weight loss and/or improving their health status may benefit from:

New Patient Orientation
  • Required for new or patients who have not participated for 2 years
  • La Jolla, Mission Valley, Oceanside, Chula Vista, El Centro

Education Options (after completion of orientation):

  • 8-week MOVE classes (La Jolla, Mission Valley & Oceanside) or
  • Diabetes MOVE classes (La Jolla) or
  • Flexible once/month Weight Control Education (Chula Vista only) or
  • 90-day TeleMOVE At-Home Weight Loss Program (Telehealth services)
