Personalize Your Plate
VA San Diego is celebrating National Nutrition Month throughout March with the theme of “Personalize Your Plate.” There is no one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition and health. Every one of us has different needs, different cultural and food preferences, different budgets, different relationships with food, different learning preferences, and abilities, thus the importance of individualized nutrition care.
Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) are food and nutrition experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. RDNs use their nutrition expertise to help individuals make unique, positive lifestyle changes. VA San Diego currently has fifteen Clinical Dietitians on staff to meet the needs of our Veterans through inpatient and outpatient care, specialty clinics, and home-based patient care.
Dietitians have the unique knowledge and privilege to review all of the medical diagnoses and circumstances our Veterans experience and translate that into a diet/lifestyle that will help support the Veteran’s whole health. VA San Diego has specialty dietitians in the fields of Diabetes, Renal, Eating Disorders, Geriatric, Weight Control, Oncology, Nutrition Support, Gastrointestinal, and Women’s Health, just to name a few. We currently offer a variety of nutrition services in the following outpatient clinics: Chula Vista, La Jolla, Mission Valley, Oceanside, Sorrento Valley, Escondido, and El Centro.
In addition to one-on-one counseling services, we also offer virtual group classes for Veterans, such as Lighten Up (appropriate for weight control, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, general healthy eating, fatty liver), Diabetes Diet (for those interested in learning how to eat healthily and support glycemic control), Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Basics (for those interested in learning how diet can impact chronic pain or other inflammatory diagnoses), Diabetes Prevention (a 6-month long program or a one-time class on how to prevent diabetes), and Mindful Eating group (for those interested to learn how to build a better relationship with food and their body). We also offer virtual cooking demonstrations to show the practical application of nutrition and culinary concepts.
VA San Diego Registered Dietitians are here to educate and empower Veterans to lead a healthier lifestyle. As we all know, change is hard and it takes time, but we are proud to support and personalize your care as part of your Whole Health journey.
