North County Stand Down for Homeless Veterans
VA San Diego staff provides medical care during stand down for homeless Veterans.
VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) will co-host the second North County Stand Down for Homeless Veterans and their dependent family members from Jan. 25 – 28, at Green Oak Ranch in Vista, CA.
“The local Veteran community felt that there was a lack of resources in the North County area, so VASDHS and other partnering organizations banded together to offer resources to the homeless in that area,” said Jerry Mailhot, event organizer.
VASDHS will provide medical treatment, enrollment services and mental health counseling to Veterans in need.

- Dental Exams and Treatment
- Legal Assistance and Veterans Court
- Clothing and Hygiene Kits
- Showers and Haircuts
- Residential Cabins and Hot Meals
- Veterans Benefits Counseling
- Nutritional Counseling
- Spiritual Guidance
- Entertainment
- Free Transportation
- Veterinary Services for Service Dogs
Last year, VASDHS enrolled 13 Veterans and provided medical services to 68 patients.

VASDHS has managed the annual San Diego Stand Down medical tent for the past 31 years and the Homeless Outreach team has a robust homeless program to assist Veterans throughout the year. Last year, the number of homeless Veterans in San Diego decreased by 9% for a total of 1,054 homeless Veterans in the county.
