VA San Diego Recognizes PTSD Awareness Month
Join VA San Diego in celebrating PTSD Awareness Month, June 26, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Multipurpose Room.
June is Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month and VA San Diego Healthcare System is hosting a program at the medical center multipurpose room on June 26th from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm.
The program will discuss PTSD treatment, and new breakthroughs in PTSD research. Although people spoke of war-related mental health issues such as “shell shock” from previous conflicts such as WW II, PTSD did not become an official medical diagnosis until 1980. Since then, the VA has made great strides in identifying and developing effective treatments.
PTSD is a mental health problem that can occur after someone has been exposed to a single traumatic event or multiple traumatic events, such as sexual or physical assault, natural or man-made disaster, and war-related combat stress.
Symptoms of PTSD include persistent intrusive thoughts and distressing dreams about the traumatic event, triggered emotional responses to reminders of the trauma, efforts to avoid thinking or talking about the trauma, and persistent hypervigilance for cues that indicate additional danger or trauma re-occurring.
