New 5-week Managing Diabetes Distress and Self-Care Class for Veterans.

Monday, March 11, 2019

VA San Diego Healthcare System is now offering a 5-week Managing Diabetes Distress and Self-Care Class for Veterans which includes cognitive behavioral therapy.

This class is designed to teach veterans with diabetes how to change their thinking about diabetes so they can feel more at peace with diabetes and improve their health and treatment effectiveness. This class is available to all enrolled San Diego Veterans at the San Diego VA Medical Center.

“With cognitive behavioral therapy, we identify any negative thinking going on or thinking that isn’t accurate and we attempt to frame the mindset differently,” said Amanda Phillips, coordinator for the program. “People can be stressed by having to poke themselves with a needle daily. This course helps patients approach their management with a new mindset that by using a needle, they can gain better information to help them maintain their health.”

There are several ways to enroll in this class. You can either self-refer by calling (858) 642-1401 or have your provider place a consult for you.  “The class is running continuously until July 2019,” Phillips said. “It’s set up, so each class in the 5-week series builds on the next one.”

The dates for the two upcoming classes are April 8 and May 6. Veterans with the following characteristics are a good fit for this class:
  • Diagnosed with any type of diabetes more than three months ago
  • Have already attended diabetes education classes
  • Veteran thinks they are “failing” at managing diabetes
  • A veteran is overwhelmed and frustrated by the demands of living with diabetes
  • Non-adherent to medical regimen
Veterans with the following characteristics are NOT a good fit for this class:
  • Newly diagnosed with diabetes within the last three months
  • Severe suicidality or homicidal that has required urgent evaluation or treatment within the last three months
  • Untreated or severe (e.g., psychosis) psychological disorders

Please contact Amanda S. Phillips at (858) 552-8585 ext. 1401 with any questions about this exciting new service.
