Starting New Years Day, Beneficiary Travel will be easing the process for reimbursing travel expenses, with reimbursement primarily occurring through direct deposit into Veterans’ bank accounts. Rules of eligibility and rates paid have not changed.

Letters describing this new process are being mailed to all Veterans who utilize beneficiary travel.

Eligibility:

To qualify for reimbursement of travel expenses related to appointment in the VA San Diego Healthcare System, the Veteran:

  • Must be 30% or greater service connection disabled
  • Must be receiving a VA pension
  • Must be travelling for an appointment related to a service connected disability
  • Must meet income level and service connection requirements

Reimbursement:

  • The reimbursement process will consist of eligible Veterans completing a form for reimbursement and submitting the completed form to the Beneficiary Travel office.  Reimbursement will be made via electronic deposit into the Veteran’s bank account within twelve days.
  • For those without bank accounts, a check will be mailed to the Veteran within four to six weeks.
  • Cash reimbursements may be made for a maximum of one appointment per day at the travel window.
