VA San Diego Healthcare System

Visitor Information

Visiting Hours and Policies

Visiting hours are based on the needs of the patient, and visitors are encouraged to discuss any special visiting needs with the unit's head nurse. Whenever possible and medically appropriate, the nurse will coordinate special visiting arrangements to meet patient and family needs.  Learn more on our Visiting Hours and Policies.

Food and Beverages

Visitors may not bring food or beverages to patients without authorization from unit physicians or nurses.

Lost and Found

Please contact the lost & found/patient effects representative at (858) 552 – 8585 Ext. 7674 if you lose any personal items or need to have your personal effects returned to you. If after hours, please contact the Medical Administrative Officer of the Day (MAOD) at 858-552-8585, ext. 4344.

Security

VA San Diego Healthcare System has a Police Service. Our officers provide 24-hour patrols of the facility and parking lots. For general police assistance, please dial 3931. In case of an emergency, dial 3647. Report all suspicious or criminal activity, vehicle accidents, and personal property losses to the VA Police while on the facility grounds as soon as possible.

Because the VA San Diego Healthcare System is federal property, all persons and bags are subject to search. In addition, no weapons, alcohol, or illegal drugs are permitted.

Smoking

The San Diego VA Medical Center is smoke-free. Smoking is prohibited anywhere indoors and near all entrances and exits. There are, however, two designated smoking areas on facility grounds. One is in the Rose Garden, across the circle from the Spinal Cord Injury Center and east entrance, and the other is located outside on the second floor, north wing. Look for signs marking designated smoking areas.

Children Under 12 Years of Age

Children under 12 may not visit inpatients. Unless otherwise specified by a physician or charge nurse, inpatients may visit with younger children in the waiting rooms provided by the elevator lobbies.

In unusual circumstances, children under 12 may visit with the permission of the physician or the charge nurse. An adult must accompany children at all times.

Clergy

Members of the clergy are welcome to visit patients who are members of their particular religious group at any time at the discretion of the unit physicians or nurses.

Exceptions

For the health and well-being of a patient, the attending physician may limit, restrict, or deny visitation. We apologize for any inconvenience when this occurs, and appreciate your understanding that it may be medically necessary.
