VA San Diego Health Care System (VASDHS) is fortunate to have an unprecedented amount of construction that will create beautiful new facilities in which to serve our Veterans and enable our staff to provide the highest level of service possible.

VASDHS is undergoing extensive construction and will continue over the next five years.

Projects include the following:

1. Replacement Spinal Cord Injury Unit
   • 162,577 sq. ft. new construction
   • Two floors for Spinal Cord Injury Unit (42 beds)
   • Two floors for Community Living Center (43 beds)
   • Includes 800 car parking garage addition
   • Construction scheduled to start in 2014, with completion in 2016
2. Parking garage (Phase 1)
   • 400 car parking garage located in current employee parking lot
   • Construction scheduled to start in July 2013, with completion in 2014
3. Parking garage (Phase 2)
   • Construction scheduled to start in 2014 (additional 400 parking spaces)
4. Remodel 4 South Unit for patient privacy
   • $5.5M Phase 1 awarded to renovate 11,000 sq. ft.
   • Create 30 private rooms which will eventually be Medical & Surgical beds
   • Project is 2 Phase completing half of the unit in each phase
   • Phase 1 Completion: Jan 2013; Phase 2 Completion: May 2014
5. Clinical lab renovation
   • Renovate 15,000 sq. ft. clinical lab space on the first floor
   • Construction is scheduled to start in July 2014, with a target completion date of 2015
6. 6 South Research renovation
   • 14,250 sq. ft. renovation and expansion of Research Wet Lab space
   • Renovate the southwest wing for research: Jan 2013, with a target completion date of Dec 2013
7. Inpatient Psychiatry expansion
   • Build out a new 16-bed inpatient unit on the 2nd floor, southeast deck
   • Will meet all patient safety standards with private and semi-private rooms
   • Construction will start in 2013
8. Admin Building
   • Build a three-story, 30,000 sq. ft. building for administrative functions, which will create more clinical space in the medical center
   • Projected to start construction in May 2013, with a target completion date of Dec 2013
9. Emergency Department renovation
   • $6M Construction to renovate and expand the Emergency Department
   • Project to be completed in three Phases; Phase 1A: completed in Dec 2012; Phase 1B: Mar 2013; Phase 2 & 3: May 2014
10. Interior design (Halls & Walls Upgrade)
    • Construction will start in Feb 2013 with a target completion date of Dec 2013
    • Improve first floor main hallways
    • Correct fire code deficiencies and improve finishes
    • Replace directional and room signage
    • Reflect Patient Centered Care (Planetree) design focus
11. Transition Center
    • Remodel first floor southeast area to create Transition Center to include the Enrollment Office, OEF/OIF/OND Transition Team
    • Phase 1 construction started in Apr 2012, with a target completion date of Aug 2013
12. Aspire Center lease
    • Lease a site for a new community-based Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans (DCHV) for approximately $500,000
    • DCHV 40-bed program in San Diego will provide homeless Veterans with 24 hour-per-day, 7 day-per-week (24/7), time-limited (average length of stay: > 90 days), residential rehabilitation and treatment services that include medical, psychiatric, substance abuse treatment, and sobriety maintenance
    • Scheduled to open Summer 2013
13. Compensation & Pension health exams
    • New lease to provide up to 10,000 sq. ft. of dedicated space to Compensation & Pension health exams
    • Goal to bring down average wait time for patients to receive exam
    • Opened Sep 2012
14. Annex Clinic for Primary Care (La Jolla)
    • Lease space for a 10,000 sq. ft. clinic to be located near the medical center, Dec 2013
15. Ambulatory Center
    • Phase 1 construction started in Oct 2012, with a target completion date of Sep 2013 (11 new exam rooms, 2 procedure rooms, and new nurse station)
    • Phase 2 & 3 (build new entrance): construction scheduled to start in 2014
