As a teaching hospital, VA San Diego provides a full range of services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research.
Academic Partners
VA San Diego is primarily affiliated with the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine* and provides training for 1,437 medical interns, residents, and fellows, as well as 64 other teaching affiliations for nursing, pharmacy, dental and dietetics. VA San Diego also has post and pre-doctoral fellowship programs. We have fellowships for clinical trainees in advance practice nursing and nursing research practicum. Additionally, we have a partnership with San Diego State University* through the VA Nursing Academy.
Each year, San Diego VA funds over 174 medical and 5 dental residents. We also train over 500 medical residents and 500 medical students. Training is also provided to over 1100 nursing and associated health trainees annually.
Veterans Service Organizations
VA San Diego maintains a good working relationship with all of our veteran service organization (VSO) partners. We meet monthly and brief our VSO representatives on changes impacting Veterans' health care.
The One VA Community Advisory Board meets monthly with representatives from Veterans groups, community partners, and local, state, and national elected officials.
US Department of Defense
As a participant in the US Department of Defense TRICARE Program*, VA San Diego serves as the main referral source for women's health and orthopedic specialty appointments.
