When Navy Veteran Peggy Cleveland needed to lose weight, she turned to the local San Diego MOVE! Program. Down from her 300 pound size in April 2007, she still needed help reaching her target goal of 135 pounds. With the help of a primary care provider, Peggy started attending MOVE! classes at the San Diego VA Medical Center.
As prescribed by the program, she faithfully completed food and activity logs and used a pedometer daily. It was everything she needed, with exception to the long commutes to class. That’s when she learned about the new TeleMOVE! 90-day program that offers the convenience of weight management at home on her own schedule.
TeleMOVE! participants weigh in regularly through an electronic scale attached to a messaging device and report their behavioral goal, weight loss, dietary change and physical activity progress. Care coordinators help patients solve problems and reset goals, while providing encouragement and support.
With a renewed sense of vigor, Peggy is now down to her target weight of 135 pounds. She is no longer on blood pressure medication and her ailments have disappeared or gone into dormancy. She now plans to compete in a triathlon.
When asked about the secret of her success, Peggy is quick to attribute her persistence. “Stick with it. It’s not an overnight thing, but a day-to-day challenge,” she said. “Anything worth having is always worth working for.”
