VASDHS celebrates National VA Research Week with symposium

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

In association with the National VA Research Week, April 23 – 27, the San Diego VA Medical Center will host a two-day symposium to share the latest in local research advances with the public. The presentations will take place on Wed., April 25 from 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Thurs., April 26 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room at 3350 La Jolla Village Drive.

“We want the community to know about the contributions we are making toward improving Veterans’ health care and to recognize our exceptional research team,” said Gerhard Schulteis, chief of Research Service at VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS.) “Their work translates into better health care for America’s heroes.”

     Wednesday’s presentations will address:

• Shingles Prevention Collaborative Study
• Million Veteran Program
• Spinal Cord Injury
• Stress and Mental Health
• Clinical/Translational Research

     Thursday’s presentations include:

• Therapeutic approaches to combat-related health issues such as:
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • alcohol and drug use combined with PTSD
  • Gulf War Syndrome
• New treatments for chronic diseases such as:
  • lung cancer
  • HIV
  • diabetes

VASDHS has one of the largest research programs in the VA nationally, with a budget of over $55 million, 195 principal investigators and 516 projects during fiscal year 2011.
